I had an ample supply of reclaimed pine for about a year. The trend of tearing down and building anew is strong here in Houston, unfortunately, but Habitat for Humanity puts a valiant effort into reclaiming anything useful from these tear-downs.
These reclaimed pine boards were once ceiling struts of an old house and had beautifully random imperfections, holes, paint splotches. I built a few garden boxes with them before feeling guilty about not using them in an interior space, where they’d deteriorate less quickly.
The first box I built with this material still isn’t showing signs of being eaten by the soil, it’s surprisingly tough, but I’ve since switched back to untreated cedar and am saving this beautiful stuff for indoor installations.
